STEMinism Amigurumi

Say it with me: empowered women empower women.

So, how can we empower young women and girls? How can we empower our sisters and daughters, our friends and our neighbors?

I think that getting women to believe they can do anything is to start young. One way to do this is to ensure that kids get proper exposure to all sorts of areas in academics, including the arts, humanities–and, quite importantly, the STEM programs.

If you don’t already know, STEM is short for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. There has been a major push over the last decade to encourage young girls and women to pursue STEM interests in their studies and their hobbies. For more information, I encourage you to check out Girlstart.

To spark the interest of the girls I know in my own life, I created this pattern set of mini STEM-oriented dolls (okay, and one empowering craftivist doll).

Pictured above, we have Scientist Sue, Architect Ashlee, Senator Sofia, Activist Alex, Astronaut Ava, Mechanic Mieko, and Doctor Des.

You can download the complete PDF pattern set here.

The best part of this whole pattern? You can mix and match hairstyles, skin tones, clothing colors, etc. and make a doll that’s the spitting image of a girl you love!

I hope you’ll enjoy this pattern set as much as I do. If you have any ideas for additional characters you think should be included, please leave a comment or contact me.

Happy crafting!
